The length from J24 to a temporary terminus at Moon Lane was opened early on 2 July 1975 to provide a summer bypass for North Petherton. In this form it was not designated motorway and operated largely in contraflow.

Road scheme and chronology data is courtesy SABRE (where much of it was gathered by member Ross Spur), with additional data from the UK Motorway Archive, the Scottish Roads Archive and the Northern Ireland Roads Site.
