The first and last east-west motorway north of the M62, the M8 links up Edinburgh and Glasgow in style. It starts at the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass, powers across Scotland's central belt almost in a straight line, and dives right into the absolute centre of Glasgow.
M8 J29A Southbar Interchange 14 May 2017
Re-opening of Southbar interchange (closed in the 1970s) connecting the M8 to the A8 between junctions 29 and 30. The layout of the new junction will be significantly different to the original; two new roundabouts will be provided on the A8 with two sliproads accessing the motorway to and from Glasgow. No access will be provided to or from the north.
M8 Newhouse - Baillieston 2 May 2017
Partly off-line upgrade of the existing dual two-lane A8 route to motorway standard, providing some new dual-three lane sections. Much of the route will have parallel A8 and M8 dual carriageways.
New junctions will be provided on the parallel road at Shawhead, Eurocentral and Chapelhall; substantial junction improvements will be carried out at Ballieston and Newhouse.
This scheme will complete the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh, which has been unfinished for many years, and will close one of the most obvious remaining gaps in the Scottish motorway network.
M8 M73 M74 Network Improvements 18 December 2015
This scheme aims to improve safety and reduce congestion on the motorway network surrounding the Baillieston (M8/M73) and Maryville (M73/M74) Interchanges. It also forms the link between a number of improvements to the motorway network in this area (M80 Stepps to Haggs, M74 Completion, M8 Baillieston to Newhouse), and is therefore expected to improve traffic flow between these projects.
The package of junction and road improvements includes the following:
1. Widening the M8 eastbound to four lanes from J10 (Easterhouse) to J8 (Baillieston).
