The M66 runs north from Manchester towards urban East Lancashire and the towns of Rawtenstall and Burnley. From the M60, it heads out past Bury and Rochdale towards Ramsbottom and then, just as it gets into its stride, it stops.
It crosses cattle grids and untamed moorland, it climbs 1-in-4 hills and plummets through hairpin bends, it runs single-track through woodland and historic villages. It's rugged and beautiful. Is it really the A39?
