Surrey's swooping swerving dual carriageway

A trip up and down the A24 between Leatherhead and Dorking - a dual carriageway with a difference. Built in the 1930s to fit the twisting Mole Valley, the Mickleham Bends have become a notorious accident blackspot.

Filmed on 26 May 2009, this video takes in the old road southbound through the woods and the famous curve on the bypass itself, before spinning around at Box Hill to see the different way the road makes the northbound journey. It was a pioneering road when it was built but you'd never build anything like it today!

Our photo gallery has lots more information on the Mickleham Bends.

What's new

London, in a new light

It was specially designed never to be noticed. And now it's disappearing, nobody has noticed its absence. It's London's own bespoke street light.

The Ringways Map is here

The wait is over! The full map of the Ringways, London’s unbuilt urban motorway network, is now online. Not even the system's planners had anything like this.

Red, white and blue

Kent County Council is run by eurosceptic nationalists. So why are they putting EU flags on their road signs?

Alley by gaslight

Some of Central London's quieter streets are still, surprisingly, lit by old and rather beautiful gas lanterns. Here are a few, by day and by night.
