A96 Dualling Inverness to Aberdeen

A major project to improve travel across the north east of Scotland, this programme of works will see the full 86-mile route between Inverness and Aberdeen upgraded to form a continuous expressway. Work will mostly take place once the A9 Dualling programme has concluded.

Work will be split into four component parts for the purpose of design, contract letting and construction.

A96 Dualling Huntly-Aberdeen 3 September 2019

Construction of a dual two-lane expressway to replace the existing A96 between Huntly and Kintore, west of Aberdeen. The project includes construction of a new bypass to remove through traffic from Inverurie.

No preferred route for this road has yet been selected; as of late 2019 there are two competing options for each section of the project.

A96 Dualling Fochabers-Huntly 3 September 2019

Construction of a dual two-lane expressway to replace the existing A96 between Fochabers and Huntly, likely to be mostly achieved by building a new road alongside the existing A96.

Design work and development of possible route options, which will then be put out to consultation, is expected to begin during 2019. At the time of writing there is no proposed route for this section of road.

A96 Dualling Hardmuir-Fochabers 3 September 2019

Construction of a new dual two-lane expressway to replace the existing A96 between Hardmuir, east of Nairn, and Fochabers. Most of the new road will be built off the line of the existing road, and the scheme includes provision of new bypasses to Forres and Elgin, relieving both towns of through traffic for the first time.

Seven grade-separated junctions will be provided along the 48 km (28 mile) length of road, including two short spurs from the new road towards Elgin.

A96 Dualling Inverness-Nairn 4 April 2016

Upgrading of the A96, including dualling between Inverness and Nairn, a new Nairn bypass, a new Inveramsay Bridge and new connection between the A9 and the A96 to provide relief for the Raigmore Interchange.

This scheme was proposed in advance of the wider proposals to upgrade the whole A96 between Aberdeen and Inverness to dual carriageway.
