A601 Derby Inner Ring Road

Scheme outline

Derby's Inner Ring Road is a dual two-lane route with partial grade separation on the north and east sides of the city centre. It was largely built in the 1970s but was never finished. Plans have now been drawn up to complete the circuit, though the new road will be to a lower standard, partially single-carriageway and with signalised junctions.

The project is set to cost £35m, of which £5m has already been spent on moving telephone cables and utilities, due to the urban nature of the route. It seems Derby City Council was allocated the funding by central government in 2000 and has been sitting on the remaining £30m for seven years now! A new shopping centre, Westfield Derby, opened in October 2007 and the ring road was supposed to be complete to allow access to this. The road will now arrive a year later in 2010. £27m for this part of the project will come from central government, £6.5m from Derby City Council, and £1m from Westfield.

14 June 2008

While the scheme was originally due to be complete in Autumn 2008, work is now scheduled to start in October this year. A group of locals halted progress for a time by mounting a legal challenge, attempting to get a piece of grass on the route declared a 'village green'. They were turned down.

On October 31 2008, the scheme received final government approval and construction will begin in January 2009.

5 June 2009
