A574 Warrington East project

Scheme outline

Widening of the existing A574 Birchwood Way between M62 junction 11 and Moss Gate roundabout to provide a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction.

Further west, junction improvements will be made at the Oakwood Gate, College Place and Blackbrook Avenue roundabouts, including signalisation of College Place. The works are designed to reduce congestion along the A574 and improve facilities for walking and cycling.

This work represents the second and third phases of the Warrington East project. The first phase delivered junction improvements at Moss Gate, Faraday Street and Oakwood Gate.

The traffic lights at the College Place roundabout are now operating, and all the new footpaths are in use. Some minor finishing works still need to be completed as some lane closures are still in place.

The easternmost section of Birchwood Way is now dualled, with eastbound traffic towards the M62 at J11 running on the original tarmac and westbound traffic on the new. However, the top surface has only been finished on half the width so the road is still only one lane in each direction at the moment, with the temporary 30mph limit still in place.
