Widening of a section of the A500 between Porthill (at the junction with the A5271) and Wolstanton (A527) to provide three lanes in each direction. These junctions are close together and a significant volume of traffic uses the A500 to join at one and leave at the other.
The finished layout appears to have two through lanes in each direction, as at present, with the new third lane separated from the others by solid white lines. This suggests that the new third lanes will provide a dedicated link between the two junctions, segregated from through traffic.
The speed limit will be reduced to 50mph from the present 70, which Highways England say will bring this section into line with other nearby urban sections of the A500.
Signs are now up stating that the work is due to finish in 18 months from now. Tree clearing is also starting to take place.
