A483 and A489 Newtown Bypass

Scheme outline

Construction of a new single carriageway road to bypass Newtown to the south, in order to reduce congestion in the centre of Newtown. The new road will follow the preferred Orange Option. Construction began in March 2016, with a given completion date of Winter 2017/18.

A bypass for Newtown was first planned 40 years ago.

Progress

This scheme has been completed and we are no longer accepting progress updates.
5 November 2010

Plans to start preliminary design and survey work were announced on 13 October 2010. Construction is not expected to start before 2014.

9 March 2016

Some initial construction work began on 7 March 2016.

28 April 2018

Short sections at each end of the route are in use, traffic light controlled single file. The main construction line appears to be far from complete.

24 January 2019

The bypass is now set to open within two months, according to the Shropshire Star.

14 February 2019

The road was opened on Thursday 14th February.
