A354 Weymouth Relief Road

Scheme outline

A new alignment for the primary A354 into Weymouth, bypassing the bottlenecks in Upwey and Broadwey. The road will start from the Ridgeway just north of the notorious "Bincombe kink" and strike eastwards to meet the Littlemoor roundabout (where the A353 will be diverted to meet it), before hugging the South West Main Line to connect with the top of the Weymouth Bypass at Manor House roundabout. The road will be single-carriageway with one flyover junction and two new roundabouts. It is expected to be completed well in advance the Olympic sailing events in Weymouth Harbour in 2012.

4 November 2008

Archaeological work has begun. Construction is expected in the next few months, pending DfT approval.

21 December 2008

Funding for the new road has been approved (18th Dec). Tree clearance works starting at Two Mile Coppice, despite a one-man protest.

6 September 2009

All bridges and structures, with the exception of the Lorton Lane bridge, are now well under construction, with the Littlemoor bridge due to be first to be open to traffic. Sound barriers in the Littlemoor area are also nearing completion.

16 February 2010

The Littlemoor road bridge is now open to traffic. All other bridges are structually complete, with the exception of the Lorton Lane bridge, which has just started construction. The A354 at the northern end of the scheme has been diverted onto a temporary road so tie-in works can take place.

17 July 2010

Update of the scheme from north to south. Alongside the current A354 near Dorchester, the footpath/cycleway has been completed, aside from one or two tie-ins and signs. Surfacing the new road has started between the Rideway and Chapel Lane bridges, with Icen Lane now on a temporary route to allow tie-in works. All earthworks and drainage/balancing ponds at Littlemoor are now complete, with preperation for the road itself now taking place. Lorton Lane bridge is now fully open to traffic, with the old road now gone, having given way to a cutting for the new road. Construction of the new Park and Ride has started, and Manor Road roundabout has been rebuilt and is now fully open.
