A1 Redhouse-Darrington and Doncaster Bypass 9 June 2019
Improvement work to the existing A1 and A1(M) between its junctions with the M18 and M62 in West Yorkshire. The full, official title of this scheme is "A1 M18 to M62 Redhouse to Darrington and Doncaster bypass", which reflects the fact that this work was previously being pursued as two separate projects, one to widen the Doncaster Bypass and the other to upgrade the A1 between Redhouse and Darrington.
A1 Scotswood to North Brunton 17 August 2018
A1 North of Ellingham 17 August 2018
A series of improvements to the A1 north of Ellingham in Northumberland, including minor changes to the alignment of the road, provision of overtaking lanes and safety improvements to junctions. At present this section of the A1 is a single two-lane road on which the volume of traffic limits safe overtaking opportunities and it can be difficult for traffic to turn right in and out of side turnings.
There are no active plans to provide a dual carriageway on the A1 north of Ellingham, so this scheme will improve the safety and reliability of the existing road.
A1 Elkesley Junctions Improvement 8 March 2017
A new two level junction is proposed to replace the current junctions. A new local link road over the A1 will mean that road users will not have to use the busy trunk road to access the village.
The existing 50mph speed limit will be removed, returning the A1 to National Speed Limit, from west of Elkesley to the eastern end of the village. Part of the current 50mph limit will be retained until the junction at Gamston, east of Elkesley, is improved in a later scheme.
A1 Birtley to Coal House 6 September 2016
The scheme involves widening the existing A1 between J65 (Birtley) and J67 (Coal House), near Gateshead, to provide three lanes each way. In order to accommodate the wider carriageway, the Allerdene bridge over the East Coast main line (between J66-67) will be replaced.
The aims of the scheme are to reduce congestion and improve safety. It follows the earlier A1 Coal House to Metro Centre scheme which provided a third lane on the section immediately to the north.
A1 Coal House to Metro Centre Improvement 27 July 2016
Widening the existing A1 dual carriageway west of Gateshead from two to three lanes in each direction, and constructing parallel link roads between the Lobley Hill and Gateshead Quays junctions for local traffic. The aims of this scheme are to increase capacity, improve safety, and reduce congestion on a section of the Gateshead western bypass.
This scheme replaces the earlier A1 Lobley Hill to Dunston scheme, which was more limited in scope.
Construction began on 26 August 2014.
A1 Morpeth - Ellingham 16 January 2015
Upgrade of existing single and dual carriageway A1 between Morpeth and Ellingham north of Alnwick in Northumberland to dual two-lane "Expressway" standard throughout, with grade-separated junctions.
Safety and performance enhancements will also be made to the section of the A1 north of Ellingham, including three new sections of climbing lane and safety measures to five right-turn junctions. There will also be a range of other safety enhancements for non-motorised road users.
This scheme was previously listed as A1 Morpeth-Alnwick.
A1 Adderstone - Belford 31 May 2011
Upgrade of existing route between Adderstone and Belford to dual two-lane standard, though it is not likely that any of the junctions will be grade-separated.
In July 2006 the Government announced that it had accepted the reccommendations of the Regional Transport Board for the North East, which did not identify this scheme as a funding priority in the period to 2016. The dualling scheme is now officially "not currently being progressed". In simpler terms it has been canned.
A1 Peterborough - Blyth 26 October 2009
Grade-separation of remaining at-grade junctions on the 74 mile section between the A1(M) at Peterborough and Blyth, closing central reservation gaps and finally removing the remaining six roundabouts which are increasingly unsafe due to traffic levels and speeds. The work breaks down to six smaller schemes:
A1 Rainton Crossroads 26 October 2008
A small scale junction improvement scheme at the dangerous Rainton crossroads. Currently this is a flat junction just a few miles north of the end of the motorway at Dishforth. The A1 here is due to be upgraded to motorway within the next few years anyway, but this junction is seen as such a priority that it is to be grade separated immediately. A flyover will be constructed but the exact layout of the new junction is not yet confirmed.
