M6 J21a-26 Smart Motorway

Scheme outline

Conversion of the M6 between junction 21a (the M62 at Birchwood) and 26 (the M58 at Orrell) to Smart Motorway.

Highways England have not yet published detailed design information, but it is likely that the scheme will involve conversion of the hard shoulder into a fourth permanent running lane ("All Lane Running"), installation of emergency lay-bys and introduction of variable speed limits.

The start date of this scheme was deferred in early 2019, to reduce the number of disruptive roadworks projects happening simultaneously on the motorway network in the north west, and at the time of writing a new start date has yet to be confirmed. That change looks certain to move the scheme into RIS2, meaning it may also ease pressure on other road schemes in the current funding period.

This scheme is part of the Smart Motorways programme of works.
