Construction of a new junction on the M11 to the north east of Harlow, with a short new link road connecting the junction to the existing B183 Sheering Road.
At present Harlow is served only by M11 junction 7, which lies to the south-east of the town. Journeys between the north of Harlow and the M11 northwards must pass through the town itself and the route of the A414 from west of Harlow to the motorway is indirect and congested. The new junction is intended to provide a direct access for the north of Harlow from the motorway network and will assist traffic on the A414 to travel north more easily.
The link road's design is extremely strange, with a westbound carriageway that travels directly from the new junction to the B183, and an eastbound carriageway that takes a very different course northwards before making a sharp right turn at a roundabout. It has been laid out this way because the link road is intended to form the first stage of a future northern bypass for Harlow that would eventually link the new motorway junction directly to the A414. The roads here would form sliproads as part of a grade-separated junction on the new road.
As part of the scheme, Essex County Council will widen the B183 Gilden Way from the new link road towards Harlow. No indication of changes to road classification have been given so far, but it's possible that the A414 will be rerouted to junction 7A when work is completed.
There is activity on the side of the M11 where the new junction is to be built. Cadent are redirecting the gas main. The main contract has gone out to tender in the last week with the main work to start in 2019.
John Graham Construction were appointed contractors for the scheme. Would should start early in 2020, providing the finance has been finalised.
