Reconstruction of the existing Downhill Lane Junction, where the A19 and A1290 meet on the north-western edge of Sunderland, to provide more capacity for interchanging traffic.
The existing junction is a diamond interchange with a single bridge and four sliproads. A second bridge will be built and a roundabout constructed, converting the junction into a conventional roundabout interchange.
The new junction will support the creation of a major new industrial development called the International Advanced Manufacturing Park.
The cost of this scheme is combined with that for the nearby A19 Testo's Roundabout scheme.
