A scheme to reconstruct the interchange of the A19 and A1058 north-east of Newcastle upon Tyne. The aims of the scheme are to improve safety and reduce congestion at the junction, which is situated just to the north of the Tyne Tunnel. Since the tunnel was duplicated and made free-flow, this junction has become one of the few remaining impediments to traffic on the A19.
The Highways Agency's preferred option is to build a new cutting and associated slip-roads that will allow the A19 to pass freely through the junction under the existing A1058.
A public enquiry was held in February 2010. The start of development work was announced on 8 May 2012.

The Planning Inspectorate sent a report of recommendation to the Secretary of State on 31 October. The Secretary of State will now need to make a decision in the next three months about whether the scheme can go ahead.
Development Consent was granted on 28 January 2016.
Main construction work will start in August. Narrow lanes and a 30mph speed limit will be in place on the A19 during the work and the speed limit on the A1058 will be reduced to 30mph for the duration of the work.
The project timescale according to the signs by the road is 2nd August 2016 - Spring 2019.
30mph average speed cameras are in place on both A19 and A1058. Lanes have been narrowed while work continues to clear verges and roundabout of vegetation. A site compound has been constructed by the A19 southbound south of the junction.
Work has now officially started, with a temporary road layout on the north side of the roundabout. Piling work has begun to form the sides of the new underpass.
The underpass opened to traffic today but the official date of the project opening is Wednesday 8th May.
The underpass is now officially open to traffic.
