Upgrade of existing route between Adderstone and Belford to dual two-lane standard, though it is not likely that any of the junctions will be grade-separated.
In July 2006 the Government announced that it had accepted the reccommendations of the Regional Transport Board for the North East, which did not identify this scheme as a funding priority in the period to 2016. The dualling scheme is now officially "not currently being progressed". In simpler terms it has been canned.
This scheme has been cancelled. We're no longer accepting updates or changes to this page.
According to a ministerial statement released on 24 May 2011, 65 miles of the A1 between Newcastle and the Scottish Border (including Adderstone to Belford) will become a Strategic National Corridor, in recognition of the road's importance. Funding for future improvements will therefore come from a national budget, controlled by the Secretary of State, instead of the regional funding allocation.
