Improvement of a 10-mile section of trunk road alongside Loch Lomond, subsequent to the existing Pulpit Rock improvement scheme.
The existing road is narrow and has an extremely poor alignment, running along the steep shoreline of the loch and constrained by the adjacent railway.
Options being considered are an on-line improvement of the existing road; a new road just inland of the railway; or an entirely new line to the west linking to the A83 at Arrochar.
Transport Scotland have announced that the new route will have a main carriageway width of 7.3m (eliminating the other option considered, of 6.0m) with 1m hard strips along Route Option 1 (generally on-line). The parallel footway/cycleway will be 2m wide.
Ground investigation works are to begin next week, with traffic management, according to Transport Scotland.
Low walls at both sides of the road have been knocked down in various places, and vegetation cut back to temporarily widen the road
