Provision of extra road capacity for the A55 across the Menai Strait between the Welsh mainland and Anglesey. At present, the A55 forms a continuous and mostly grade-separated expressway from Chester to Holyhead, except at the Menai Strait where it reduces to a single two-lane road to cross the Britannia Bridge. The scheme aims to provide two lanes in each direction at this crossing.
Design options under consideration include providing a new bridge immediately east or west of the Britannia Bridge, a new bridge further east, or widening the existing crossing. Junction 8A, immediately north of the bridge, could be closed and replaced with a new local link road between the A5 and the A5025.
Public consultation with 4 options closed in March 2018. Responses now under consideration by Welsh Government.
